These attractive images represent the conjunction of Western technology with the traditional, if clichéd art of ukiyo-e, Japanese woodblock printing. Here, native Japanese photographers produced idealized images of home life, standardized portraits, delicate landscapes and charming genre scenes - all interpreted for Western consumers.
